Written by the foremost author in the field, this book explores the principles of informal logic as applied to clinical problems and the uses of evidence in logical reasoning. It covers general concepts, theories, paradigms, and definitions; EBM reasoning at each step of a clinician's work; and decision making based on the integration of all of the above. The book describes the assessment of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in practical clinical medicine; clinical and community health; and methods in various quantitative and qualitative analyses, especially meta-analysis. The innovative blend of informal logic and structured evidence-based reasoning make this book stand out in a crowd.

Focusing primarily on diagnosis in areas where evidence for treatment is well accepted (e.g. DVTs), and treatment in other diseases where diagnosis is not complex (e.g. asthma), this text is written by leading emergency physicians at the forefront of evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is ideal for emergency physicians and trainees, emergency department staff, and family physicians specialising in the acute care of medical and injured patients.

The second edition of The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions contains essential guidance for preparing and maintaining Cochrane Reviews of the effects of health interventions. Designed to be an accessible resource, the Handbook will also be of interest to anyone undertaking systematic reviews of interventions outside Cochrane, and many of the principles and methods presented are appropriate for systematic reviews addressing research questions other than effects of interventions. This fully updated edition contains extensive new material on systematic review methods addressing a wide-range of topics including network meta-analysis, equity, complex interventions, narrative synthesis, and automation. Also new to this edition, integrated throughout the Handbook, is the set of standards Cochrane expects its reviews to meet.Written for review authors, editors, trainers and others with an interest in Cochrane Reviews, the second edition of The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions continues to offer an invaluable resource for understanding the role of systematic reviews, critically appraising health research studies and conducting reviews.

Focusing on practical, patient related issues, this volume provides the basic concepts of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) as they relate to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and presents various practical applications. It includes EBM concepts for use in the identification of cost-effective panels of immunostains and other laboratory tests and for improvement of diagnostic accuracy based on the identification of selected diagnostic features for particular differential diagnosis. EBM concepts are also put forth for use in Meta-analysis to integrate the results of conflicting literature reports and use of novel analytical tools such as Bayesian belief networks, neural networks, multivariate statistics and decision tree analysis for the development of new diagnostic and prognostic models for the evaluation of patients. This volume will be of great value to pathologists who will benefit from the concepts being promoted by EBM, such as levels of evidence, use of Bayesian statistics to develop diagnostic and other rules and stronger reliance on "hard data" to support therapeutic and diagnostic modalities.

Lipid disorders impact an estimated 42 to 50 million adults in the United States, yet many primary care physicians are not optimally treating this growing population. Hyperlipidemia Management for Primary Care: An Evidence-Based Approach is a comprehensive resource for primary care providers that offers information and treatment options that can be incorporated with ease into everyday clinical practice. This evidence-based text weighs the benefits of pharmacologic treatments, popular diets, therapeutic foods, herbs and vitamins as a means to manage hyperlipidemia. A section dedicated to treating special populations examines the particular needs of elderly patients, women, athletes and other unique groups. Complete with clinical case studies to illustrate real-life patient scenarios, Hyperlipidemia Management for Primary Care is a handy reference for any physician seeking clear cut information on this increasingly common condition.
